The Problem

Companies are asking operations, recruiting, growth, sales, and program staff to use AI, automation, data, and reporting tools without necessarily hiring engineers. The pain is not lack of generic AI education; it is translating AI and data literacy into specific workflows like pipeline inspection, recruiting strategy, reporting, program coordination, and internal execution. Teams need someone who can identify the workflow, implement practical tooling, and leave behind a repeatable operating habit.

Potential Solution

Offer a fixed-scope AI workflow sprint for one business function at a time. The service audits a recurring workflow, maps the source systems and manual handoffs, builds lightweight automations or templates, documents AI usage and governance rules, and trains the team on the new process. The first version should be delivered manually with common tools such as spreadsheets, Power BI, Tableau, ATS exports, CRM exports, shared docs, and approved AI tools.

Why Now?

Job ads are increasingly treating AI fluency, data literacy, automation, and governance as baseline expectations for non-engineering roles. Many teams are not ready to buy a platform, but they will pay for practical implementation that upgrades a visible workflow quickly.

Yes, exactly. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it's, it's a, it's an, it's a whole new world. It's interesting. I think that, we're all kind of figuring this out. I, to your point, I don't think anyone has the perfect answer. And if they do, they're probably, you know, making it up, but, based on our own experience, like, and I, when I say we, it's like, we utilize AI tools within Octopus. We've had some pretty positive experiences. We've also had some pretty like, we're not going to use it for that. We're trying to do it in a very pragmatic, careful, measured approach, which I think I would strongly advocate for anyone. I did a presentation about how we utilize AI at Octopus and we talk about it.

AI fluency is a baseline expectation. PMs at this level should be comfortable using the full range of modern tools (e.g. LLMs, Cursor, Claude) to move faster and make sharper decisions. That might mean prototyping a workflow in Cursor before writing a spec, orchestrating AI agents to synthesize customer feedback into working theories, or drafting API contracts with a model loaded with our architecture context. The expectation is sound judgment about what will get to the best outcome for the customer and the team.
